12 Blockbuster Films That Flopped In America (But Were Loved Overseas)
5. Battleship (2012) - $303 Million Worldwide
Budget: $209m Domestic Box Office: $65.4m International Box Office: $237.6m After the multi-billion dollar success of the Transformers franchise, Hasbro attempted to repeat the formula by bizarrely deciding to turn the classic board game Battleship into a blockbuster sci-fi. Although Peter Berg makes an admirable-if-misguided attempt to create his own form of Bayhem, the end result was full of terrible dialogue, wooden acting and innumerable cinematic cliches. Ironically, much the same as the Transformers movies, only without the box office success. Many were predicting Battleship to be a flop months before it even hit theaters, and from a domestic standpoint they were proven right. The movie could only open in second place with a disappointing $25.5m, and by the end of the theatrical run its box office takings were just $65.4m, an awful number for such an expensive summer blockbuster. Thankfully for the studio, Battleship proved to be much more popular at the international box office, which accounted for over 78% of the total gross. The movie saw most of its success come from the Far East, with earnings from China, Japan and South Korea amounting to over $80m, while Russia proved to be the most lucrative European market. Although Taylor Kitsch may not remember the summer of 2012 fondly given his leading man status in two high-profile misfires, it is worth remembering that unlike John Carter, Battleship did eventually manage to turn a small profit.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
