Remember when Benjamin Franklin Gates vowing to steal the Declaration of Independence as part of a treasure hunt was just about the maddest we could have imagined Nicholas Cage could get? Then we got older, and we found out how crazy his filmography actually is. From serious films like Leaving Las Vegas, to oddball comic-based comedy like Kick Ass - Nicholas Cage has range.

The most recent addition to Cage's work is yet another update on a classic, H.P. Lovecraft's Color Out Of Space. With yet another rejuvenation of a horror classic, it's clear that there's still life in the concept of remakes yet.

Color Out Of Space is as weird as you'd expect a Lovecraftian tale to be: an asteroid carrying an alien made out of light lands near a secluded (in this edition, alpaca) farm. The entity it carried makes quick work of adapting its surroundings to suit it. It's quite the spin on Darwinian concepts of adaption to survive.

Where The War of the Worlds had Martians taking quite the aggressive approach to world-conquering, this unnamed colourful alien does it with physical and psychological infection.

With a smidge of Wiccan practices, a smattering of body-horrific mutation, and a whole lot of Nicholas Cage going absolutely bonkers, Color Out Of Space does a spectacular job of weaving a story of isolation and manipulation which ultimately, and quite obviously, doesn't really end well for anyone.

Alpaca fans might be better served staying away, though.
