12 Cancelled Sci-Fi Moves We Wish We Could Have Seen

3. Shane Black's Wild Wild West

Godzilla vs Batman
Warner Bros.

Remember Maverick, that surprisingly fun Mel Gibson western comedy from the early nineties?

It came from Superman/ Lethal Weapon director Richard Donner, and the earliest script for eventual Will Smith flop Wild Wild West was set to be directed by him with Gibson in the starring role, meaning we were robbed of a sci-fi spin on Maverick’s likeable, light western action.

Better yet, said script was authored by none other than legendary action screenwriter/ The Last Boy Scout scribe Shane Black. Black's version didn’t stray as far from the original television sixties cowboy series Wild Wild West as the eventual Smith-starring film did, but still managed to maintain the only element of the finished film which was, admittedly, pretty cool—namely, the gigantic robotic spider used by the antagonist.
