5. Dr. Will Caster - Transcendence

It's no big surprise that Johnny Depp's Dr. Will Caster dies in the first act of Wally Pfister's promising directorial debut, Transcendence. He is assassinated by a techno-phobic resistance group known as Rift, who disapprove of him developing the tools to transfer human consciousness to a computer. When he succumbs to radiation poisoning from the bullet, his consciousness is uploaded to a system, and "Will" appears to grow beyond anyone's control, though everything we've seen beyond that is simply a mixture of intriguing and mysterious images. One of the more peculiar clips shows Johnny Depp in physical form at what appears to be a late stage of the movie, making one wonder: how can he possibly have come back to life? Short of an extremely bleak ending, though, it's safe to say that Will the human and Will the AI will both be put to rest.
