12 Controversial Horror Movies That Shocked The World

12. Peeping Tom

Peeping Tom is a 1960 horror classic that successfully meshed serial killing with portable hidden cameras. Think Dexter but instead of being a charismatic and relatively normal (on the surface) serial killer who hunted bad guys and took a sample of their blood as a trophy, Peeping Tom's killer was a reclusive porn addict who killed only women and his trophies were home-made films of them in their dying moments. Just describing that was creepy and weirdly perverted, which is probably why the film caused quite a stir back in the 60's. Critics couldn€™t stomach the complex serial killer protagonist, the home-made film aspect felt inappropriately meta, and audiences just didn€™t get (or couldn€™t sit through) the film€™s underlying voyeuristic themes. Even the concept of the film would be considered pretty damn creepy today, which is why the film's tepid reception ultimately destroyed the director's career. It has only been in recent years that the film has been re-evaluated and deemed a horror masterpiece.

My life story is nothing special. I haven't cured ebola, I'm nowhere near stopping terrorism, and I'm still working on that climate change problem. Instead, all I've done so far is put a few hundred words together in an attempt to make people laugh. You can follow me at @Fry_ying_pan but don't be offended if I don't tweet back. It's usually because I've spent too long trying to think up a witty response that the reply window has closed.
