12 Controversial Movie Endings That Came Out Of Nowhere
10. The Hallucinogenic Slasher - Sunshine
Sunshine, which was written by Alex Garland and directed by Danny Boyle, is - for the most part - a brilliant and intelligent sci-fi movie about a group of scientists and astronauts who set out to "reignite" the sun with a huge bomb strapped to a spacecraft. Whilst much of the movie feels carefully and intricately realised, though, things take a turn for the worst in the movie's third act and in the ending - basically the movie turns into a slasher. And not even a good slasher, with a well-thought antagonist, but one that doesn't really seem to know what it's doing and tries to cover it up through vague, hazy editing. The crew are bumped off one by one in a generic fashion, and then the main protagonist - played by Cillian Murphy - winds up staring at the sun in a strange, hallucinogenic sequence that doesn't really fit in with the rest of the movie. The final shot of the film hints that the mission was successful, but what a shame the last few scenes were so crap.
Sam Hill is an ardent cinephile and has been writing about film professionally since 2008. He harbours a particular fondness for western and sci-fi movies.
