6. My Brother, Borat
The Premise: An unauthorised sequel to Sacha Baron Cohen's hilarious satire Borat, written and directed by Kazakh filmmaker Erkin Rakishev in an attempt to redress the "misconceptions" created by Cohen's film. The protagonist, an American journalist named John, watches the Borat movie and heads to Kazakhstan, where he meets Borat's mentally ill brother Bilo. Of course, once they head to Borat's home town, it's far from what was seen in Cohen's movie: it's instead a glowing picture of contemporary Kazakhstan. Why It Never Got Released: Rakishev began this project in 2006 after becoming outraged at the "offensive" portrayal of his country in Borat. His movie itself contains a number of potentially objectionable scenes, namely a sequence in which Bilo is raped by a donkey. Funding has since run dry during production, which combined with the obvious copyright issue, is holding My Brother, Borat from seeing the light of day. Hilariously, though, Rakishev says he welcomes any legal challenge from Cohen, because it would only shine a much needed ray of publicity on his absurd production.
