1. Betty - Betty Blue (1986)
Betty is barking. Her uninhibited sexuality and powerful erotic pull hide massive instability. Yes folks, we are talking Borderline Personality Disorder again. She shows symptoms of extreme rage and anger - throwing paint over her lover's boss's car when she feels he is taking advantage of Zorg. Working as a waitress, she gets into an altercation with a diner and promptly stabs her in the arm with a fork. Zorg notices that she has a bottle of tablets in her bag. Alarm bells start ringing but Betty tells him they are to help her sleep. Batty already, her severe inherent nuttiness shines through whenever a pregnancy test comes back negative. She chops off her hair, kidnaps a kid and then gouges out her own eye. Eventually she is relegated to an asylum where she is in an irrevocable catatonic state. Zorg performs a bit of euthanasia with a pillow to put poor Betty out of her misery. It is a terribly sad film - watching a woman go gradually insane but it is very engaging at the same time with Beatrice Dalle giving a sexy, spellbinding performance as the afflicted Betty. The Director's Cut meanders a bit and is not as intense as the shorter version but Betty's descent into madness will capture your heart whatever version you watch. A terrific portrayal of female neurosis.
