12 Deeply Disturbed Female Film Characters

9. Evelyn Draper - Play Misty For Me (1971)

13.05.2013misty 3 More than 15 years before Fatal Attraction, Clint Eastwood's directorial debut Play Misty For Me highlighted the dangers of having random flings with women who have Borderline Personality Disorder. Dave Garner, a radio DJ, gets jiggy with a woman named Evelyn who is a massive fan of his. Of course she won't let bygones be bygones when it is evident that Dave doesn't want her. She relentlessly stalks and harasses Dave. She attempts suicide in his house and when that fails to procure a romantic commitment from Dave, she angrily breaks into his house and destroys his possessions, attacking Dave's housekeeper in the process. For her sins, she is carted off to a mental hospital and Dave rekindles his relationship with an old flame called Tobie. Evelyn is soon released and it becomes clear that she is intent on killing Tobie and Dave. When she falls off a cliff after a final showdown with Dave, we are glad to see the back of this psycho pest. Evelyn didn't have enough characterisation to be sympathetic. She was just a raving mad woman. Another cautionary tale about one night stands.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
