8. The Stab Premiere
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnTckzsYgg0 The Scream films love to make the horror feel personal. These killings aren't happening at a faraway camp to a bunch of dumb teenagers who you can't relate to. Theyre happening in your home to characters who are just as smart as you. The opening of Scream 2 takes that idea to its logical conclusion, attacking people watching a horror movie in the theater just like you are. It just so happens that the film theyre seeing is called Stab, and its basically an exact recreation of the original Scream movie complete with an actress who looks just like Drew Barrymore. The same way Craven commented on other horror movies with the first Scream, hes now commenting on his own film, with one of the characters angry that the girl doesn't just hang up the phone and dial *69. It's great that Craven has a sense of humor about this whole franchise and never takes it too seriously. This opening sequence is a whole lot of fun, and it plays up how enjoyable it can be to watch a dumb horror film with a rowdy audience. But like the original, the comedy soon fades away as it all turns genuinely scary. Craven has made these characters relatable by putting them in the same position youre in, so when all the deaths hit, they feel that much more real.
