9. The Killers Revealed
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyVKJXfRm_g Scream establishes early on that the killer could be anyone, but what it doesn't really establish is that it could be more than one person. So in the final sequence, the identity of the murderers is pretty surprising, but whats even better is the realization that it never had to be just one guy. Its pretty brilliant to have the two killers be dudes who are obsessed with horror movies. It's like they're aware that they're in the last act of a slasher film, with Stu laughing that Nancy has to die because she's no longer a virgin. Those are the rules. In a weird way, it kind of makes the audience feel somewhat complicit in whats happening, as if Stu and Billy are performing all these murders for your entertainment. You paid to see a slasher film and came to see blood, guts and a strict formula; theyre just giving you what you want. Really, it's as if there are three killers in the movie: Billy, Stu and the audience.
