12 Dire Plot Twists From Recent Hollywood Films

10. Aaron Paul Did It - Central Intelligence

Now You See Me
Warner Bros.

Here, we go from one terrible surprise villain twist to another and much like the aforementioned Equalizer 2, this wasted another great actor.

In this solid buddy-cop comedy, CIA agent Bob (Dwayne Johnson) and accountant Calvin (Kevin Hart) , who went to school together, have teamed up to investigate The Black Badger, a mysterious criminal who murdered Bob's previous partner, Phil (Aaron Paul), in a lift and then framed Bob. The duo work to stop the Black Badger from selling satellite codes to the highest bidder.

Eventually, Bob goes to an auction posing as the Black Badger, but as bad luck would have it the real Black Badger shows up... it's Phil. Well, he might've fooled Bob but he certainly didn't fool any of us.

This is another example of how not to do a plot twist. Three key things spelt this one out in flashing neon lights long before the big reveal.

Firstly, the Black Badger being unknown immediately set up a twist involving a known character, meaning viewers were on the lookout. Secondly, in the flashback to Phil's 'death', we never saw a body and that's always a giveaway sign of a fake-out death. Thirdly, and most importantly, why would a film bring in a talented, well-known actor like Aaron Paul for a single flashback death scene?
