12 Dire Plot Twists From Recent Hollywood Films

6. Dr Lawrence Gordon Is A Secret Jigsaw Apprentice - Saw 3D

Now You See Me
Lionsgate

This terrible 'final' chapter in the interesting but wildly inconsistent Saw franchise delivered another example of a plot twist so obvious it was actually painful.

As soon as Cary Elwes was announced to finally be returning to the franchise as Dr Lawrence Gordon for the first time since the original, it seemed very likely he would be a surprise villain, since the Saw franchise does love surprise villain twists.

Sure, he could've been trying to get revenge on the Jigsaw Killer and his apprentices (and that would've been far better) but the investigator role was taken by an obnoxious, atrociously-played detective in the movie. Additionally, before this reveal he'd only appeared briefly at a survivor's meeting and it seemed unlikely he'd be brought back for just a one-scene cameo.

What makes this twist even worse is that it makes zero sense. Gordon was not supposed to be the most likeable character in the original but he definitely wasn't a psychopath, so why would he happily join forces with the madman who put him through hell and tried to murder his family?

The Saw films usually end with a big twist and while these have varied in quality this is definitely the worst Saw plot twist to date.
