12 Dire Plot Twists From Recent Hollywood Films

7. Franz Oberhauser Is Blofeld - Spectre

Now You See Me
MGM

As soon as the title 'Spectre' was revealed, it was obvious that Blofeld would finally be returning to the James Bond franchise and Christoph Waltz was, in spite of how badly he was wasted in the final film, a perfect fit for the character and the right sort of age too, so although everyone involved in the film insisted that the character named 'Franz Oberhauser' wasn't Blofeld, everyone knew that he was.

Sure enough, Oberhauser revealed his real name to Bond during a torture scene and while this was actually a good scene for the most part, this reveal was so predictable it was groan-inducing.

Oh, and then there was the backstory that Bond and Blofeld were stepbrothers and Blofeld hates Bond because he felt his father showed favouritism towards Bond. Brotherly jealousy is Blofeld's motivation? Seriously?!

So, Oberhauser killed his dad, faked his death, changed his name and has not only been leading Spectre, but was responsible for the events of Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and Skyfall, as well as the man in charge of the villains of those films.

That doesn't make any sense whatsoever!

There was a simple solution here: don't make this a twist. Blofeld using a fake name didn't add anything anyway. After the failure of a similar plot twist in Star Trek: Into Darkness two years earlier, you'd think studios would've learnt something from that. Unfortunately, they hadn't.
