12 Directors Who Admitted They Ruined Their Own Movies
3. Steven Soderbergh's Heart Wasn't In The Production Of Underneath
The Underneath is arguably Steven Soderbergh weakest work yet. The movie is a critical and financial failure as it suffers from weak dialogue rested upon a formulaic and chaotic plot. It is no surprise considering that the director himself got disenchanted with the movie early in the production phase. He knew, even then, that the project was going to be a complete and utter failure.
He openly talked about being absent-minded during production while his mind wandered on what he actually wanted to do after the miserable project ended. He said in an interview, "It's a very unpleasant feeling to know that, not being able to discuss that with anybody, and see everyone working so hard—cast and crew to give you what you want every day. And you know this thing is dead on arrival. I resolved during that that was never going to happen to me again. I was using that time on the set... kinda fantasizing about what I was gonna be doing when it was over."
The production of The Underneath was so despairing that it made Soderbergh rethink about his professional life. He sees that point in his life as professional rock-bottom that compelled him to rebuild. He ended up hating the movie so much that he called it "the worst thing he ever made."
