Considering his success with District 9, Director Neill Blomkamp's subsequent movie was highly anticipated to be just as entertaining. Having a relatively fresh premise of a class-struggle in a post-apocalyptic world, Elysium could've been amazing. The end product, however, is a visually flashy movie but built upon a bland plot that most of the moviegoers would have forgotten by the time they stepped out of the cinema.

According to Blomkamp, there's no one to blame but himself. In an interview, he said, "Any frustration I feel with Elysium is with myself. I just think the script wasn’t… I just didn’t make a good enough film is ultimately what it is. The thing that bothers me is if I feel like I f*cked it up."

He added that he was too invested in making sure the set design and the special effects were executed properly that he ultimately forgot to flesh out a compelling story for the movie. It was only after the theatrical release and the inflow of bad reviews that Blomkamp realised he ruined the movie. Given the chance, he would love to start the movie all over again.
