Alright, so I, Robot director Alex Proyas isn’t exactly known for his ability to imagine cheery futures for us all, as seen in his less-than-utopian Matrix influencing nightmare Dark City. But boy did he manage to ramp things up a notch or fifty with this brutally unexpected, wildly disturbing ending.

For much of its run time, the horror-tinged sci-fi action flick Knowing follows our hero Nic Cage as he attempts to decipher a small child’s uncanny ability to predict the date of future mass catastrophes. Maybe he’ll be able to warn people this way! Not sure how that would work since the kid is just writing down dates and not exact locations nor the nature of the incidents, nor could all the incidents even be avoided since some are natural disasters, but hey—in a few minutes, it so won’t matter.

Since the next catastrophe this whiz kid predicts is the absolute destruction of all life on earth. Yep, this standard enough sci-fi mystery takes an unexpected turn and kills off every human on earth in its climax.

Points for originality, we guess?
