12 Dumb Decisions In Harry Potter Movies We Can't Forgive
11. Ginny Weasley's Absent Personality
This one may be the most contentious of the changes made
by the film series, as it’s hard to quantify but has raised more ire from fans
than a lot of smaller, less impactful changes. The charge, which we’re in agreement
with, is that the films rob Ginny of both her agency and character throughout their
runtime, cutting most of her best lines and leaving out a lot of her character-defining
moments.
For one thing, Ginny aids the in-Hogwarts anti-Death Eater rebellion in the later books along with Neville after our heroic central triumvirate have left for more dramatic pastures, whereas Neville alone is holding up the fort in the films. For another, her love triangle between Dean and Harry is reduced to her waiting for our protagonist to take a hint and notice her, whilst her part in numerous pivotal battles are also downplayed and cut entirely in some cases.
This sort of compressing and cutting isn’t ideal for any character, but it’s downright disastrous for one who ends up as the love interest for our hero.
