12 Dumbest Movie Plot Twists Of 2017
6. Naomi Watts Almost Murders A Child Molester - The Book Of Henry
The Twist: Early on in the movie, single mother Susan's (Naomi Watts) genius son Henry (Jaeden Lieberher) develops a brain tumour and dies, but leaves behind a book for his mother, announcing that their next door neighbour Glenn (Dean Norris) is molesting and abusing his own daughter.
Henry orders Susan to kill Glenn, detailing how she can carry it out without getting caught. Susan even goes to the lengths of setting up a sniper rifle to shoot Glenn, before realising that taking advice from your dead 11-year-old son isn't the best idea, and leaves it to the cops.
Why It's Dumb: For starters, the marketing suggested that The Book of Henry was going to be a sweet coming-of-age story, not a weird, tonally jarring, creepy and unintentionally comical flaming trainwreck about a woman dealing with her son's death in the worst way possible.
This movie did not need Naomi Watts peering down the scope of a sniper rifle, but in the so-bad-it's-awesome stakes, it's actually a good thing it happened. On any serious filmmaking level, though, Colin Trevorrow's major narrative left-turn was an hilarious, baffling failure.
