2. It Was All A Video Game - Serenity

Because "it was all a dream" is just too damn obvious a plot twist these days, Steven Knight's mystery thriller Serenity went in an altogether wackier direction.

As it turns out, protagonist Baker Dill (Matthew McConaughey) is actually a video game character residing within a game world created by Patrick Zariakas (Rafael Sayegh), a young boy whose father died in Iraq in 2006.

Effectively, Baker is a video game avatar approximation of Patrick's dead dad, and the entirety of the game is a means for Patrick to work through his own current family trauma.

This leads to Patrick murdering his abusive stepfather Frank (Jason Clarke) at the end of the movie, just as Baker does to Frank in the video game world.

If you're confused, fear not - you weren't the only one. On one hand you have to admire Knight's ballsiness to even attempt something so out-there, but the utterly demented nature of the twist made Serenity an easy critical punching bag, and it also bombed catastrophically at the box office.
