4. West Of Memphis (2012)
You’d be mistaken to think that the wonderfully detailed, yet horrific trilogy of documentaries that precede this roundup of the West Memphis Three case contained everything that you need to know about this tragic story.
This is a follow up to the three Paradise Lost films that documented the witch hunt and trial of the teenage boys wrongly convicted of a triple child murder in 1992. If you haven’t seen them, you should - although it’s worth mentioning at this point that you don’t need to have, in order to enjoy this one.
It does cover the entire case, from the arrest of the boys who were targeted simply because they dressed in black and showed an interest in Metallica to their subsequent efforts to obtain freedom - and also further evidence that challenges the already shaky prosecution.
Don’t go into this one if you’re already having a bad day, but if you’re looking for a voyeuristic look at one of the more incredible trials in recent history then this the one. Just be ready for an intense two hours that will make you glad that such an travesty of the law process has been presented in such an intelligent way, yet sad of such injustice that this world sometimes endures.
