12 Fantastic Films You Only Remember For One Scene
9. Up - Married Life Montage
As endearing and energetic as Up may be, it would be fair to say that its most memorable scene is an early four-minute montage in which childhood sweethearts Carl and Ellie Fredricksen are shown starting their new life together. There's no dialogue, just perfectly realised snapshots of a marriage through the decades. By turns heart-warming and heartbreaking, we see them transform a ramshackle hut into the perfect home - but dipping into the savings jar to pay for a damaged roof only pushes that dream trip to Paradise Falls a little farther out of reach. The most poignant moment, in which we see the couple painting a nursery before the scene slides to them sobbing in the cold grey of a doctor's surgery, is guaranteed to bring a tear to your eye. There's so much hope, humour and humanity condensed into those four minutes that the following feature film feels more like an afterthought.
Yorkshireman (hence the surname). Often spotted sacrificing sleep and sanity for the annual Leeds International Film Festival. For a sample of (fairly) recent film reviews, please visit whatsnottoblog.wordpress.com.
