5. Network - Mad As Hell
Having lost his job as a news anchor due to falling ratings, Howard Beale (Peter Finch) isn't going to sneak away quietly through the back door. No, he announces on live TV that he plans to kill himself on his final show. When viewers tune in for this morbid spectacle, it gives the network its highest ever rating and so they decide to keep him after all. But although he backs down on his threat, that doesn't mean he's in a better mood. Instead, he fills the air with a thunderous soliloquy, a spectacular rant against the system. And what's more, he wants you to join him. ''...I want you to get up right now. Sit up. Go to your windows. Open them and stick your head out and yell - 'I'm as mad as hell and I'm not gonna take this any more!' Things have got to change. But first, you've gotta get mad! You've got to say, I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!'' It's an incredible performance from Finch, and one which earned him a posthumous Best Actor Oscar.
