The first reboot of the 007 franchise was a bold move that was only ever going to work with the implementation of a strong Bond and equally strong villain. While Daniel Craig most definitely held up to his end of the bargain, Mads Mikkelson was more than a match as the 'eye bleeding' Le Chiffre.

The 'banker' for the world's terrorists, Le Chiffre is so evil it's inferred that he was responsible for the 9/11 attacks, or at the very least involved in the planning. Like many Bond villains he has a number of associates to carry out his dirty work, however he doesn't quite have the bevy of henchmen 007 fans are accustomed to in their villains.

While his physical trait of bleeding from the eye makes for a creepy aesthetic, it is Le Chiffre's unflappable nature that makes him so fearsome and a kindred spirit for Bond. Both hero and villain have their plans foiled at times throughout the movie, both have near death experiences, and both return to the card table with a minimum of fuss.

Surprisingly Le Chiffre is at his most vulnerable while brutally torturing Bond, as while he may be inflicting immense pain on him, it is 007 who is really in control. The whimpering manner in which he acts before he is killed by Mr Green leaves a slight tarnish on the character. It does however manage to display how feared the organisation he works for must be for him to cower so quickly.
