They really don't come as venomous and despised a villain as Calvin Candie, a man whose actions and mindset are equally horrifying. Be it the demands of a handshake, his joyful voyuerism as two slaves beat each other to death, or the unblinking glares as another slave is eaten alive by savage dogs, Calvin Candie is as vile a villain as they come.

DiCaprio is extraordinary in his portrayal of the slave trader, utilising his incredible acting depth to bring an old school charm to the character while never letting us forget what a callous bastard he really is. In what has now become an iconic story, DiCaprio accidentally cut himself on glass during filming of the infamous 'auction scene'. Rather than stop the shot to get himself tidied up, DiCaprio stayed in character, wiping his bloody hands over Kerry Washington's Hildi for extra effect.

Candie's final scene truly emphasises not only his fearsome nature, but also the power he has. Not happy enough making Django and Schultz pay top dollar for the life of Hildi, Candie has to emphasise he is the victor by demanding Schultz shake his hand. It's all too much for the loveable German, who promptly shoots him dead instead.

Like many entries on this list, there are numerous deaths that are indirectly the result of Candie's actions, but he is always in the position to let others do his dirty work. It is this high status and unflappable nature that make him so damn formidable.
