2. Various (Gary Oldman, Bill Pullman, Viggo Mortensen) The Thin Red Line
How many other filmmakers would be able to get away with hiring an assemble cast of the biggest Hollywood's actors and then subsequent cut their performances out of the finished movie? Not many, but Terrence Malick is certainly one of them. In the final cut of his three-hour war movie, The Thin Red Line, performances such as George Clooneys once prominent role is reduced to nothing more than one brief scene. This, in fact happens far more than actors such as Gary Oldman, Bill Pullman, Viggo Mortensen, Martin Sheen and Billy Bob Thornton, who on the pretence that they would be involved with such a talented cast, flew out to Australia for the gruelling three month shoot. Sadly, none of their performances ever saw the light of day. Malicks almost iron fist over these matters is certainly intriguing and can be seen as both positive and negative. Personally, I feel that if for the sake of the film he is cutting people out then as a film lover as see it as admirable, as it benefits the narrative. Some actors may not feel the same way.
