7. You're Sleeping Nicole (2015)
The Film: You're Sleeping Nicole (or Tu dors Nicole, to give it its French title) is a drama directed by French-Canadian film-maker Stéphane Lafleur that follows a young woman as she becomes increasingly disillusioned with her with her life over the course of a summer in her small town. Though they have the family home to themselves, twenty-two year old Nicole and her best friend Véronique struggle against boredom, but when Nicole's older brother shows up with his band to record an album the girls find their friendship put to the test.
What The Rotten Tomatoes Critics Said: With a score of 100% from 13 reviews, Tu dors Nicole was as popular with Rotten Tomatoes reviewers as it was at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival where it was selected to be screened as part of the Directors' Fortnight section. The film was described as a lighter than air dream that you are reluctant to wake up from, with its very slightness its greatest weapon. Top Critic Clayton Dillard praised the film's director for not following in the footsteps of similarly well received movies made in the same vein:
"Stéphane Lafleur denies Nicole the angsty treatments given similar characters in films like The Graduate and Frances Ha by refusing to saturate the film with an undergirding sense of charm."
