8. Take Out (2004)
The Film: Micro-budget drama Take Out takes place over a day in the life of deliveryman Ming Ding, a Chinese immigrant working illegally for a take-out restaurant in New York City. Way behind with payments on his debt to the men who smuggled him into America for his shot at the dream, Ming is given until the end of the day to come up with the overdue cash. After begging from friends and relatives doesn't produce enough to satisfy the smugglers, Ming realises that his tips that night are the only thing that will save his life.
What The Rotten Tomatoes Critics Said: Sean Baker and Shih-Ching Tsou were both commended for their resourcefulness while making their feature debut as writer/directors, with the bulk of Take Out being shot in a real take-outs and featuring many non-professional actors. Korean-American actor Charles Jang brings the hapless Ming to life with a deeply affecting portrayal of a struggling immigrant that was well worth the wait according to Rotten Tomatoes Top Critic Noel Murray:
"The movie took a long time to get distribution, but there's no expiration date on filmmaking this strong."
