5. The Taking Of Deborah Logan (2014)
The Film: Adam Robitel's film follows a PhD student as she searches for the perfect subject for her thesis film on Alzheimer's disease. Everyday housewife and mother Deborah Logan is chosen for the project, but as the student film progresses, a series of odd events that have nothing to do with Alzheimer's begin to unfold. Before long, it becomes apparent that Deborah is facing something far worse than the debilitating disease with which she was diagnosed.
What The Rotten Tomatoes Critics Said: The Rotten Tomatoes critics found it quite amazing that, despite the torrent of found-footage inspired films that came before it, The Taking Of Deborah Logan managed to stay fresh from the start and become increasingly interesting as it creeps along. Like most every film in this saturated sub-genre of horror, it begins by dropping us in the lap of the protagonist with little thought for exposition, though Rotten Tomatoes reviewer David Keyes doesn't believe that a film need be considered original to be respected:
"Not at all original or distinctive in this volatile genre's ever-changing standards, but it is cautious, well-made and so driven by believable performances that it earns more respect than one might have assumed it deserves."
