4. Things Behind The Sun (2001)
The Film: A young reporter for a Los Angeles music magazine heads back to his Florida home town to interview Sherry, a local rock singer whose band are becoming increasingly popular because of a song she wrote about being sexually assaulted as a girl. It soon transpires that Owen's reasons for going home are more than professional, however. Through flashbacks in Owen's memory we learn that Sherry was violently gang-raped, and that Owen himself was an unwilling participant.
What The Rotten Tomatoes Critics Said: With three remarkably raw performances at its core, Things Behind The Sun was called as enthralling as it is hard to watch by the Top Critics. Praised for showing the devastating effects of the rape from different perspectives, Allison Anders' film somehow manages to steer clear of therapeutic sensibility while presenting us with a nuanced portrait of two people unhinged by the same childhood catastrophe, an angle Rotten Tomatoes reviewer Emmanuel Levy described as unique:
"Things Behind is intensely emotional but not sentimental (except for the ending). The duality of P.O.V, showing the rape and its ruinous consequences from the perspective of the victim and perpetrators, also endows the film with a unique angle seldom seen before."
