12 Great Recent Movie Performances Destined To Be Forgotten
8. Paul Walter Hauser - Richard Jewell
It's an unfortunate consistency that ever since Gran Torino, Clint Eastwood movies have been rather hit-or-miss. Because of this, his projects tend to go under the radar, even if they're noteworthy. Richard Jewell is an example of a recent Eastwood production that WAS worth seeing, and beyond just the subject matter, much of that is due to the acting.
While the likes of the always-solid Sam Rockwell and Kathy Bates got some love, it was Paul Walter Hauser who was the most notable. Much like Affleck, Hauser's not trying to wow you, he's purely committed to making the movie work as best he can. Jewell is a role with a heavy dose of restraint, but Hauser ensures that he remains emotive. There's so much fear, worry, and emotion building within Richard, but it remains stifled deep inside, and you just can't help but be invested in his plight.
This could've easily been Paul Walter Hauser's big breakout role, but with the subdued response to Richard Jewell, it appears that he'll still be stuck with the 'character actor' designation until further notice.
