12 Great Recent Movies You'll Never Be Able To Watch Again

11. A Hidden Life

Leave No Trace
Fox Searchlight Pictures

A Hidden Life is a very successful effort from director Terrence Malick. It tells the emotionally resonant story of a German man who refuses to fight for the Nazis and it benefits a lot from Malick's decision to just keep things straightforward.

Rather than indulging in the pretentious nonsense of films like The Tree of Life, Malick does a simple, linear drama story and it works wonders. In addition to that, as you'd expect from Malick, the cinematography is to die for.

Nevertheless, you'll only want to watch it once for two reasons. Firstly, it's not exactly a cheerful affair and makes for quite a hard-hitting viewing but secondly, and more importantly, it's three hours long for no clear reason.

As a result, it's bloody exhausting to watch and this ridiculously inflated length was actually a misstep for the film. It would've been just as good if it was literally eighty minutes shorter; hell, it would've been better.

Really long movies are never the most rewatchable ones, and A Hidden Life is no different.
