12 Greatest Ever Comic Book Movie Anti-Heroes

12. John Constantine

Constantine Keanu Reeves Finger Death Hell Blood
Warner Bros

Ok, ok, so the movie with Keanu Reeves wasn't exactly the best comic book movie that ever was, but as a character - with the script and the plot and parts of the performance stripped away - the heavy-smoking exorcist is still a great character.

Warner Bros should probably be hauled in front of the cinema Gods for rewriting the blonde, Liverpudlian as Keanu Reeves, but there is something in Reeves' distinctly unconventional charisma that makes him suited to liminal heroes. He was great as Neo because he was awkward and sold the geeky aspect well, and he's actually under-appreciated as Constantine because he plays up the character's aloof charm so well.

He's no Batman, obviously, but he makes Ghost Rider (an excellent character ruined by two eye-gouglingly bad films) look even worse by comparison. And there's definitely something to be said for a revisionist re-appreciation of the supernatural comic book movie now that it's been unfortunately proved that the TV show with the "right" version of the character also didn't work.
