It is telling that, despite Disney Animation’s attempts to distance themselves from the Disney Renaissance formula in the 2000’s, their biggest hit of the decade was advertised through trailers loaded with classic Disney characters. Their 2002 film Lilo and Stitch captured the attention of audiences with an inventive marketing campaign that positioned the troublesome alien Stitch as the black sheep of the Disney family.

Each of these four teasers began by re-enacting a classic scene from a Disney Renaissance movie. However, Stitch managed to ruin the moment, prompting the likes of Aladdin and Ariel to tell him “Why don’t you get your own movie?”. After this, we got a few short clips from Lilo and Stitch, with “Back in Black” playing in the background.

Although these teasers relied heavily on their surprise value, they remain entertaining today. The footage depicting the classic characters was all new, but it manged to feel authentic – adapting Stitch to fit into the distinctive worlds of Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King was probably not an easy task. The childlike, mischievous Stitch was the highlight of the trailers, with his unique personality and interests being made clear.

However, the scenes at the end of the teasers indicated that there would be more to the film than the antics of one character. The teasers for Lilo and Stitch are some of the most unique Disney have ever created, and certainly succeeded in attracting audiences to the film.
