9. The Multiverse Opens (Loki)
At the start of 2021, thanks to the prior announcement of the Doctor Strange sequel, MCU fans were well aware that the franchise would be bringing the multiverse to the screen very soon. No one, however, would have predicted that this would have been thanks to a Variant of Loki in a Citadel at the End of Time, where she killed a Variant of Kang the Conqueror.
The entire Loki series was built around Loki and Sylvie breaching the TVA in the name of revenge. It had been teased previously what could happen without the Time Variance Authority clipping the branches of time that sprout off from various Nexus Events, and Sylvie realised these.
He Who Remains himself was an eccentric character, and not what fans would have expected from Kang the Conqueror, however this was just one of his Variants. He warned Sylvie of what would happen should she kill him, but she went ahead and did it anyway. What followed was a visual representation of the mess now made of the Sacred Timeline, and the opening of the multiverse.
Loki found himself in front of a different version of Mobius and Hunter B-15, and this one move has changed the entire landscape of the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward. This was arguably one of the most pivotal moments of Phase Four so far.
