3. Just Don't Watch The Tape, Rachel - The Ring
The Ring, and its Japanese counterpart, follows a pretty simple premise: watch a tape you're told not to, girl comes out of a well, then out of the screen and kills you. Katie Embry shows this off perfectly in the film's opening shot, spelling out the legend to her friend and being killed by a mysterious force a week later.
Audiences are introduced to the film's final girl Rachel at Katie's funeral, when she is hired by the family to look into her death. Despite being given all the warnings in the world that there was something seriously mysterious and suspect about Katie's death, Rachel travels to the Shelter Mountain Inn where she was staying and quickly stumbles upon the tape.
The static image of the ring quickly illuminates the screen, but Rachel just keeps on watching and naturally gets a call immediately after telling her that she's got seven days left to live. There's literally one rule to follow to survive the world of the Ring, and Rachel broke it with just her first couple of scenes. There's investigative journalism, but this is the exact opposite way of surviving a horror movie.
