12 Horror Movie Sets That Were Definitely Cursed

7. The Possession

Whereas many films featured here centre around Catholicism and Christianity and their associated forms of possession, this movie focuses upon the supposedly true-life tale of a wine cabinet possessed a dybbuk – a malevolent spirit of Jewish folklore.

While a possessed wine cabinet is a scary enough thought alone for anyone who enjoys a tipple or two every now and then, some even more hair-raising antics occurred on set. Star Jeffrey Dean Morgan, a self-confessed sceptic, recalled that while filming pivotal scenes lights would suddenly explode mid-take and inexplicably cold gusts of air would occur on the closed set.

Not long after filming had wrapped, the movie’s props were placed in storage in case any reshoots were needed. The storage facility ended up burning to the ground, taking the replica dybbuk box with it. The cause of the fire has never been determined.

With all the weird stuff going on during the production of The Possession, the phrase “don’t mock the box” became an on-set mantra for fear of disgruntling the demon that possessed the ill-fated wine cabinet.

At one point during filming, the crew received an offer from the real dybbuk box’s owner to have it transported to the set but producer Sam Raimi and scriptwriter Juliet Snowden weren’t too keen on the idea and politely declined the offer. No wonder.
