12 Huge Movies That Captain Marvel Destroyed At The Box Office

Box Office: $880.2 million

Spider-Man's inability to cross the one-billion mark is jarring enough on its own, but when you factor in Captain Marvel's sudden success, it's downright jaw-dropping.

Not only is the webslinger far more recognisable to mainstream audiences than Carol Danvers, he's more popular than almost all of the MCU's headliners. Despite that, and the fact that he made his MCU debut on the billion-crossing grand stage of Captain America: Civil War, his solo outing (Spider-Man: Homecoming) still couldn't quite make its way into that elite club.

Though an $880 million total is absolutely nothing to be sneered at, it still begs the question as to why Peter Parker couldn't cross the line that Captain Marvel now has. It could be down to the fact that China (which provided sturdy bonuses to both films' earnings) has added $152 million to Captain Marvel's takings in a single month, already eclipsing Spidey's moderate bonus of $116 million.

Furthermore, Captain Marvel didn't have quite as much competition at its time of release, while Spider-Man: Homecoming debuted in the midst of a summer that also saw the likes of Despicable Me 3, Transformers: The Last Knight and Dunkirk hit the big screen.

Whatever the reason, Captain Marvel can be proud of the fact that she bested Marvel's most iconic superhero. Not a bad feat for a newcomer, right?
