Captain Marvel becoming the most successful female-led superhero film of all time wouldn't have been that surprising three years ago because its only competition would have come in the form of Catwoman, Elektra and Supergirl - all of which were critical and commercial duds. Today, however, she had to go up against the 2017 masterpiece that is Wonder Woman and, somehow, Carol Danvers did the unthinkable.

Wonder Woman's domination of the box office was only mildly surprising because of the negative response to previous DCEU films. However, the film was met with acclaim from fans and critics who had waited too long to see a female superhero in a truly worthy adventure. This, and the fact that she's unquestionably the most well-known female superhero in the world, make Captain Marvel's quick surge past its impressive $821 million cume all the more staggering.

What's even more spellbinding is that Captain Marvel hasn't just outgrossed all of these separate female-led flicks, it has also managed to outgross their combined total - now that is nothing short of marvelous.

While the film may struggle to surpass Wonder Woman's domestic takings of $412.5 million (especially with hefty competition in the coming weeks), it's earned its place in history as the world's highest-grossing female-led film.
