9. Can Wally Pfister Pull Off His Own Movie? Transcendence
Transcendence is the first feature film from Wally Pfister, the long-serving cinematographer for Christopher Nolan who has been so vital in bringing the director's visions to vibrant life. Now, he's branching off on his own, directing his first feature, a sci-fi budgeted at around $100 million and starring Johnny Depp and Morgan Freeman. Not bad, eh? Though Jack Paglen's script has been held in a high regard for several years, the buck really stops with Pfister, who will hopefully be able to turn all this promise into a riveting, thoughtful sci-fi flick. From what we've seen so far, it appears that Transcendence will probably be one or the other: it will either be excellent, or an incoherent mess, but given how long he's been in the trenches with Nolan, hopefully some of that skill has rubbed off on him. If nothing else, the film's going to look great: hopefully the story will follow suit.
