12 Huge Questions For The Future Of The MCU
7. Will Spider-Man Exit The MCU?
Believe it or not, if the original deal announced between Marvel and Sony remains in effect, it looks like Spidey’s time in the MCU is almost up. The contract made between Sony and Marvel was that the character would appear in three MCU team-up movies – which ended up being Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame – and three solo movies, the second of which is coming out in July.
With Sony having success with Venom (in terms of profit, not quality), are they going to yank him back after his third solo outing?
Answer: Spidey can't leave the MCU, because that wouldn’t benefit Marvel or Sony.
Sony may be planning their own Spider-Man movie universe (thanks a lot, Venom), so it’s understandable why they would want him back, but would that really be the best decision for them financially? The MCU Spider-Man has been a far bigger win for them than those underwhelming “Amazing” Spider-Man films, so taking him away from Marvel would be financial suicide.
Besides, Spider-Man is one of the new faces of the MCU. He’s set to carry on Iron Man’s legacy, and they need him around for more installments. Spider-Man disappearing from the MCU doesn’t make sense from a narrative standpoint nor a financial one.
If there’s no more Spider-Man in the MCU, nobody wins. We all just lose.
