12 Incredible 2013 Performances That Definitely Won't Win An Oscar
9. Kristen Scott Thomas (Only God Forgives)
Only God Forgives is easily one of the most divisive films of 2013, despite being a daring, visually dazzling piece of moviemaking. One of the few things most people agreed on was that Kristen Scott Thomas turned in a particularly impressive performance, having one of the few roles that actually contained a fair amount of dialogue. Playing the diabolical matriarch of a mob family who comes to Thailand to avenge the death of her son, Thomas spews insults left and right and manipulates everyone around her. Her complicated relationship with her other son, played by Ryan Gosling, fuels many of the surreal and disturbing elements of the film. Only God Forgives won't earn any nominations on Thursday because of the mixed reception it received, but Scott Thomas will likely be more worthy of awards than many of the eventual nominees in the Best Supporting Actress category.
I love movies, literature, history, music and the NBA. I love all things nerdy including but not limited to Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and Firefly. My artistic idols are Dylan, Dostoevsky, and Malick and my goal in life is to become like Bernard Black from Black Books. When I die, I hope to turn into the space baby from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
