12 Incredible 2013 Performances That Definitely Won't Win An Oscar
6. Martin Freeman (The Hobbit: Desolation Of Smaug)
Like his Sherlock partner Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman is rapidly becoming one of the most in-demand talents out there, and like Cumberbatch, he will not even get a sniff of an Oscar nomination this year. However, after a strong start in An Unexpected Journey that confirmed for many that their suspicions about him being perfect for the role were right, Freeman continues to prove himself the perfect Bilbo Baggins, nailing the duelling emotions of fear and curiosity that drive the character. He might be easily suited to Bilbo's more relatable characteristics, such as his friendly nature and his everyman appeal that grounds the more fantastical feel of the dwarves, but The Desolation of Smaug challenges the British actor more than its predecessor. Here, Freeman is also tasked with showing the first signs of the ring's impact on his psyche, when Bilbo nearly loses the ring fighting off spiders in Mirkwood forest, and we are given a look into the darker side of the character. Overall, Freeman expertly displays the courage, kindness, and daring that made the character such a compelling figure in the book, and even though The Hobbit movies have been divisive so far, few would deny that Freeman has been anything but excellent
I love movies, literature, history, music and the NBA. I love all things nerdy including but not limited to Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and Firefly. My artistic idols are Dylan, Dostoevsky, and Malick and my goal in life is to become like Bernard Black from Black Books. When I die, I hope to turn into the space baby from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
