12 Incredible Endings To Otherwise Terrible Movies

4. The Matrix Revolutions (2003)

Matrix Revolutions
Warner Bros.

it's almost a cliche now to talk about how badly the Wachowskis messed up the Matrix sequels. Through a mix of bad decisions and poor ideas, the sequels took everything that was so beloved about the original and blew it up, replacing innovation with boredom and focusing on entirely the wrong things for way too long.

But there are some stand-out moments in both sequels and the end of Revolutions in particular stands out as vastly superior to the rest of the film.

Having met with Deux Ex Machina and bartered a deal to stop Smith from conquering both the machine world and the real world, Neo enters the Matrix to face the villain (and his countless clones). Some of the effects work is a little iffy, but the ceremony of the battle is perfectly pitched and it's about the purest expression of the Wachowskis' Matrix action aesthetic outside of the original. It's easily the best fight scene in the trilogy and it's just a shame it's let down by so much of what comes before it.
