12 Incredibly Successful Movies (That Nobody Likes)

7. Alice In Wonderland

Alice In Wonderland
Disney

Gross: $1,025,467,110

Alice in Wonderland was, at one point, the fifth highest-grossing film of all time and it was one of the earliest members of the billion-dollar club. Why? No-one really knows.

It is based on a beloved book, it had a very high-profile cast and Tim Burton was still reasonably popular back then, but it's still hard to explain why this was quite as successful as it was, especially since it was never very well-liked.

The performances are mostly OK and it's reasonably well-made, but those positives couldn't save the film from its cliched, under-written script, incoherent plot and lack of emotional impact. It also presents a thoroughly annoying hybrid of the beloved source material and many modern fantasy cliches, such as a "Chosen One" prophecy and a big final battle at the end.

A belated sequel came out in 2016 and bombed at the box office, further showing that no-one really cared for this and while Alice in Wonderland isn't a completely terrible film, it's certainly not among Disney's finest modern movies.
