12 Insane Documentaries Way Stranger Than Fiction
6. Wild Wild Country
To some people, Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh was a mystifying, spiritual guru, teaching his followers his theories on how humanity can better itself. To others, however, he was a highly dangerous cult leader and potential terrorist.
Wild Wild Country documents the story of how the controversial figure built his own community from the ground up in an Oregon desert, with help from his thousands of followers. The film tells the story from the perspective of some of the cult’s most committed disciples, as wells as some locals that didn’t take too kindly to Rajneesh’s arrival.
It wasn’t long until it grew much larger than a local dispute as guns, drugs and attempted murders lead to a worldwide investigation into Rajneesh and his people.
The rapid rise of this community is both impressive and terrifying. The cult-like following that was built on peace and love lead to the exact opposite and became one of the most controversial, yet widely unknown, stories in America’s recent history.
