2. The One In Which Nobody Actually Goes To Oz - The Wizard Of Oz

The Movie We Know...

A classic tale of escapism and confronting personal fears as Dorothy and her band of friends tackle allegory and a Wicked Witch to find their way to Oz the Great and Powerful and their own moments of revelation. With munchkins.

But, What We Almost Got...

Something way more grounded (and terrible sounding). Back in the late 30s, MGM were concerned that contemporary audiences wouldn't accept the fantastic elements of L. Frank Baum's original story and sought instead to explain everything in a real-world sort of way.

So all of the main characters became purely allegorical: for instance, The Scarecrow was a stupid man and the Tin Man was a criminal punished by wearing a metal suit... Who knows why they thought that would have been a BETTER film...
