12 Key Influences In Batman Begins

9. Batman As A Symbol

In Batman Begins, Bruce gives a great speech to Alfred upon returning from his 7-year absence, explaining that he wants to become more than a man, to create a symbol of justice which cannot be corrupted or broken down, unlike the mere flesh and blood of any one person. This is highly reminiscent of a scene from the 1980 comic series The Untold Legend Of The Batman, in which Bruce says very much the same thing, and though it's a lot less subtle about how Bruce goes from that idea to dressing up in black, it's still a terrific comic scene. Untold Legend may not be one of the more iconic or better-known Batman texts, but it's worth reading at least once just to see how it played a small yet vital part in developing Bruce for the movie.
