12 Lesser Known Fall Movies You Should Be Excited About

11. 99 Homes

Bryan Cranston Trumbo
Broad Green Pictures

Release date: September 25

From director Ramin Bahrani, 99 Homes is a tragic new drama about greed, corruption, and the American dream. As one of the lead characters explains in a dark piece of dialogue, "America doesn't bail out losers. America bails out winners." Taking place during the 2008 housing market crash, the film follows a young father (Andrew Garfield) whose family is evicted from their home, so he goes to work for corrupt real estate shark Rick Carver (Michael Shannon) in an attempt to get them back on their feet.

Critics loved 99 Homes when it premiered at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival, and it currently has a 95% Rotten Tomatoes score. Early reviews have called it fast paced, energetic and heartbreaking, although its political commentary may be a bit on the nose at times. Imagine The Wolf oO Wall Street but with the housing market and without any of the humoir.

After committing to the superhero world with The Amazing Spider-Man, this will be Garfield's first dramatic role in five years. It's a shame he was booted off of Spidey, a role he seemed genuinely ecstatic to play, but he's such a fine actor that it'll be great to see him return to more serious material. Plus, how could you not like Michael Shannon playing a corrupt maniac?
