Suffragette is a period drama based on real events that reflects an important social issue, and it stars Meryl Streep. Needless to say, there is essentially no way you won't be seeing this pop up during award season this year.

Directed by Sarah Gavron, Suffragette takes place in the early 20th century and focuses on members of the British women's suffrage movement. Carey Mulligan stars as Maud, a wife and mother who joins the suffragette movement, no doubt giving as incredible and emotional a performance as audiences have come to expect from her.

Meanwhile, Meryl Streep plays Emmeline Pankhurst, the real life British activist who helped win women the right to vote. Suffragate's screenplay was written by Abi Morgan, who has previously worked with Streep on The Iron Lady, another historical drama which earned Streep the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2012. That was her 17th nomination, by the way. Let's see if Pankhurst can get Streep yet another Oscar to add to her growing collection.

Although it might sound like generic Oscar bait on the surface, based on the impressive trailer it seems Gavron isn't just directing this on autopilot and will be really delving into these characters and their complexities in an interesting way.
